Competitive Speech Camp Gr 7-12Visual & Performing ArtsPublic speaking is one of the top skills that employers look for, yet it is one of the most dreaded parts of required curriculum. But it doesn't have to be! Students who attend this camp will engage in activities that allow them to bulid confidence while simultaneously harnessing the strengths and interests they already have to hone their skills as a public speaker. Current members of the Spring Lake Park Speech Team and head coach Shannah Anderson will co-lead this four-day program where we will focus on effective speaking techniques as well as strengthening leadership skills. Participants will explore the 13 categories of MSHSL Speech (Creative Expression, Discussion, Duo Interpretation, Extemporaneous Reading, Extemporaneous Speaking, Great Speeches, Humorous Interpretation, Informative Speaking, Original Oratory, Serious Drama Interpretation, Serious Poetry Interpretation, Serious Prose Interpretation and Storytelling). Students will select a piece and focus on effective vocal tone, facial expression, and bodily gestures (blocking) and work towards a mini-showcase on Day 4.2023-2024 Community Education - SMR

Theater Summer Camp 2023Visual & Performing ArtsGrades 6-8 1-week camp June 26-30 Mon-Fri 9-3:30 Grades 9-12 2-week camp July 24-July 28 Mon-Fri 9-3:30 We are thrilled to offer our students the opportunity to work with some of the finest teaching artists in the Twin Cities! Our program combines singing, acting, and dancing to establish and hone the building blocks of performing, foster creativity and nurture self-esteem. Through positive and imaginative class experience, our performers will develop confidence in all of these areas, strengthen their skills and have lots of fun! This camp is open to all skill levels - no prior experience in performance required, just a desire to have fun and work with others to create some fantastic memories! We are fortunate to be able to offer you the chance to work with these amazing artists: Shinah Hey is a Twin Cities-based actor who has worked across the country performing as leads in two national tours with the Kennedy Center and at some of the top regional theaters in the nation. In the Twin Cities she has worked at The Guthrie, Ordway, Chanhassen Dinner Theaters, Theater Latte Da, Children’s Theater and Artistry. She was most recently seen in the TikTok famous and critically acclaimed run of Ride the Cyclone as Ocean O’Connell Rosenberg at Arena Stage. Up next she will be returning to the Guthrie to understudy three roles in Into the Woods. Shinah has a passion for helping kids find what makes them unique in the theater world and leaning into their specialty. Benjamin Dutcher has been seen on operatic and theatrical stages across the country. A Twin Cities-based singer, actor, and educator, his repertoire covers a vast range of both opera and musical theater and includes on-camera appearances for History Channel and PBS. His previous engagements include work with Minnesota Opera, Theater Latté Da, Opera Columbus, Asolo Repertory Theater, Skylark Opera, Trademark Theater, and Mill City Summer Opera. In addition to performing, he has been a teaching artist and private voice teacher for multiple schools and organizations around the Twin Cities. Benjamin was a part of the Drama Desk Award winning cast of All is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914 Off-Broadway at the Sheen Center in NYC (broadcast on PBS) and can be seen this summer in Godspell with Artistry. McKinnley Aitchison is an actor, singer and teaching artist based in the Twin Cities. She’s been seen on stages throughout the Twin Cities including Theater Latte Da, Illusion Theatre, History Theatre, Old Log Theater and more. In addition to performing, she is an integral part of the Illusion Theater’s “Theater Access for Youth” mission by leading their Peer Education Programming. She provides partnership with schools and local communities to engage youth with arts and leadership building activities such as adapting and performing plays for their peers on topics of current concerns in their communities. She takes her talent and knowledge to middle schools and high schools spanning throughout the metro and Southern/Central Minnesota. She currently leads a residency program at Highland Park Middle School for students interested in exploring the foundations of theater arts and performance.2023-2024 Community Education - SMR

Ukulele Camp Gr 4-8Visual & Performing ArtsIn "Uke Can Do It!" students will learn the fundamentals of playing the ukulele including tuning, strumming and picking techniques, reading chord and tablature notation, and songwriting! Experienced students will be guided with more mature playing techniques, while younger instrumentalists will learn the basics.
